From Office Walls To Open Skies: My Journey To Outdoor Living

A Life of Variety

At 63 years old, I’ve worn many hats throughout my life—each experience shaping who I am today. From my early days in the military to start-up sales via telemarketing, to various trades to navigating the corporate world, with President Club membership, and routine Million Dollar Sales Club membership, and finally to Operations Management, where I was able to transform a failing service organization achieving 2% profit margins, to a model of efficiency within one year, achieving 60% profit margins while tripling revenue. I’ve learned that adaptability is key. But it wasn’t until I embraced the freedom of remote work that I discovered my true passion: creating comfortable and functional outdoor working spaces.

Confined to Four Walls

I was accustomed to being on the road 6 days a week. Like many, I found myself working from home during the pandemic. This was a shock. Initially, it was a challenge to adjust to the isolation of indoor life. My wife did not know what to do with me. I was a spare part in my own home. I missed the energy of an office and the inspiration that comes from being around others. However, this situation sparked a realization: why confine me to four walls when nature is just outside my door? I live on nearly an acre and a half. An acre of woods, mature oak trees.

Embracing Outdoor Living

With a background as a “Jack of All Trades,” I began experimenting with outdoor workspaces. I transformed my deck into an inviting office, complete with comfortable seating, weather-resistant tech, and seasonal decor. This journey was not just about finding a place to work; it became a way to reconnect with nature and improve my overall well-being. At first, I was confined to “good days”. I was bound and determined to find a way to “FlexMe” to year-round outdoor living.

The Flexibility Factor

I discovered that my outdoor space could flex between work and leisure seamlessly. Whether it was enjoying morning coffee while reviewing emails or hosting friends for an evening fire pit gathering after work, my outdoor area became a multifunctional haven. This experience ignited my desire to share what I learned with others who might feel trapped indoors.

Now, through FlexME Outdoors, I aim to inspire others—especially those who may feel confined by traditional work environments—to embrace the outdoors as their workspace.
